Deepak Chopra, international author on the topic of spirituality and health in, The Book of Secrets: Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life (2004), defines healing relationships as bringing your problems to someone that wants to help you. Chopra distinguishes this pattern of healing relationship from two other popular patterns of popular experience

  • Using compassion to distance someone from another person’s problems;
  • Alternatively to simply do harm to another person, conscious or unconscious.

From my perspective this is core to the idea of a practice of “mutual sustainability,” whereby one party Is not obstructing another parties capacity to live in a world that serves the basic needs of each person within the local economy in which they live.

In the tradition of the rapid growth economy, the spiritually affluent separated from those who are not wealthy. They see your pain and they are sorry, but there is nothing they can do. Or, the affluent, who created a battlefield that harms people with harmful action that robs people of jobs, health care and more, create a field of no win.

Chopra suggests that your only choice becomes to walk away and ignore. Easier said than done. We are still living in an economy of fear where jobs, income and support of family rely on tangible evidence that if we can put “real cash” in our checking account, that is a real consideration.

Yet, with the Occupy Movement and a recognition that only 1% of people have the resources to survive, maybe there is something to what Mahtama Ghandi implied to the British with the rise of Hitler and Mussolini, when he said you can find in your soul and mind and   counteract and in todays’ terms socially sustain beyond the disruption of outsiders who impose actions that will not sustain you.

The challenge is finding people, who are sincerely interested in your welfare and wants to help you in a healthy way by recognizing your talent, competency and capability.

Ultimately anyone who thinks green and spiritually, knows  the only way to guide your self into conversations with others in the company of other good people, who share these values. Vice versa the challenge is for the person helping to find people sincere in wanting help.

The Challenge in Today’s Economy

So what does this imply in this challenging economy where many are challenged to have work and access to resources for health that sustain them? To me this invites a new form of social networking that integrates a spiritual practice with a foundation of science and sense of humanity.

Becoming part of social network stabilizes your ability to sustain, is an important new measure in how we as people work with each other, create our quality of life and build the communities we want to raise and educate our kids. This also implies mustering a new view of success and failure.

The western economic world is shaped around winning and losing. Success has been measured based on what you accumulate in wealth and goods. When you stop caring if you fail or succeed and look at life as a path of learning, it is about watching how you perform in each circumstance and if you take the time to learn from that circumstance and how you apply that learning moving forward.

Today, your network of association and how you learn with others is coming into play as a much stronger focus than how you learn alone and what you personally do to succeed. This is a new form of social sustainability and practice. It implies hard work and at the same time, it’s your choice.

Do you want to remain on the “no-win” battlefield, “the spiritual vacuum” of no repair to harm,” or work hard along others that want to create a wide spread community of change through how they chose their friends and work along side each other?

A Practice of Value – From Text Messaging to Mutual Sustainability

We view ourselves with our mobile gadgets as networked individuals, but do we build trusted friendship and initiate respect for mutual sustainability on line or with our gadgets? Fundamental to using any technology as human beings, we still need to look at how we communicate, why and patterns of ineffective conversation versus conversations that leave a healthy imprint?

How we communicate, learn and engage using a mixture of virtual reality with fostering deep engagement with people to take on a project and create together something meaningful that sustains and therefore sustains the network is now becoming a learning platform of importance.

Being a solo entrepreneur and authoring a formula of simplicity for success is no longer a perspective anyone can afford. What are the elements now that matter and what do you need to know about people?

In my workshop program, Foundations of Portfolio Work, I have people work in teams with each other to achieve rich engagement exploring what is hidden that you cannot learn about people in a short conversation.

Every person goes through life with framing their choice of activities based on values and past learning they have woven from experiences with 6 forms of networking based on Karen Stephenson’s Quantum Theory of Trust. The focus you bring as a portfolio work to each aspect of networking displayed in the diagram: and how you integrate this into your interactions through social engagement is how you can construct your relationship with your Social Network and the funding sources and economic decision makers (clients, employers, investors).

How you integrate this into your interactions through social engagement is how you can construct your relationship with your Social Network and the funding sources and economic decision makers (clients, employers, investors). Within a person’s rolodex and how they relate to life, they travel circles of people in network with specific purposes.

Of the 6 types of networks that I have experienced expert, innovation and learning formed in ongoing network activity are not given enough attention by most people, whether you are working or not. Today’s entrepreneurs and community-based eco-citizens can no longer afford to fly solo.

  1. Counteracting ignorance of science. All people now need a level of knowledge and sophistication that assures them access to  The latest in scientific knowledge – whether you need this knowledge to manage personal and family health, of if you are raising or mentoring a child to be a scientist, or developing a product or working with scientists;
  2. Developing your personal basic income – learning the sustainable investment approaches to prepare for retirement and insure protection during life transitions related to career or illness.
  3. Shaping and cultivating your  social network, who you meet and who you engage to support any part of your life at home or work;
  4. Build your own action learning lab. Show your network you are always learning and applying that learning. Assure access to education and knowledge for a variety of purposes and cycles of life after formal education that is relevant to what you are managing in life whether preparing for a new life cycle/life style or transitioning into a new career or type of work.

The quality of your interactions with people in your network is how you can organize this into a flow of intelligent that helps to form trust in local economy to move people beyond the protest activity created by OCCUPY and today’s political stage to learn with each other and act to create the change we need.

While this may imply learning about innovative knowledge or practices, it does not imply that everyone can and will from into a network of people who learn the depth of engagement and trust to develop an innovation or change initiative of any kind. A recent 60 minutes episode profiled Freeman Hbrawski President of University of Maryland

Hbrawoski showed and described a summer boot camp in which he prepares his top students for what is to come. All gadgets are taken from the students; this includes no participation in email or Facebook.

The students learned how to really talk to each other, develop friendships, which are critically to supporting each others success at school and related internships. The kids learn how to relate and work with others creating depth, building rapport and trust to share a way of working as a team drawing on everyone’s capacity and talent.

Across the board, of the students interviewed, everyone said this was an exceptionally valuable experience they never had experienced; it gave these students an experience of something important that assured their educational time at UMB to be of value and life changing.

This orientation experience also prepares each students to work as interns and employees in the UMB campus based incubator of 70 companies providing jobs and internships for future scientists and mathematicians enrolled at UMB.

My prediction is that these social relationships formed during what Hrabrowski describes as a boot camp, created a basis for lifelong friendship after graduation when the students go out into the world all around the globe. During this time, the students learn they can support each other not to fail and that ultimately their community governance and leadership own that, as well. Imagine living in a community committed to your success!

Do we need new mechanisms of rapport and trust with people from real time connection in person where we live and now can form local communities of economic sustainability? Whether you are a person who has decided to live simply by serving your family and community or a person working. These can potentially be cycle of lifestyle that in today’s economy require learning a new method of value and relating based on a formation of intelligence that values anyone at any stage in their life.
